Karen is a child and youth specialist. She has worked for the Ministry of Children and Family Development as a clinical therapist working with both parents and children varying in age from 3–18. Her heart focus is working with adolescents who struggle with a variety of mental health challenges, including psychosis, anxiety, anger, depression, eating disorders, suicidal ideation and self-injury. She has worked with families where there is multigenerational mental health trauma and abuse. She has coached parents in learning effective techniques to help cope with their child’s behavior.

Karen has a heart for people who hurt and has worked with the Children Who Witness Abuse program at the local women resource society where she did trauma counseling and ran groups for both children and moms to help cope with their PTSD.

Her competencies are children and youth mental health, trauma counselling, grief and loss, family difficulties, attachment building, anxiety, abuse (sexual, emotional, physical), life transitions, parental coaching and couples therapy.

She has real passion with working with children and youth and helping parents overcome parenting struggles.

2. PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS

Karen is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and holds a Master’s degree from Trinity Western University and a B.A. degree in Caregiving and Counselling from Columbia Bible College. She has a Diploma in Educational Assistant.

She is trained in a wide variety of therapeutic approaches including Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Satir, Observed Experiential Integration (OEI), Emotion Focused Therapy, Sand-tray and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

Karen is fluent in Punjabi and love’s working with people through the multi-generational issues of families within the Indo-Canadian community.

3. WORLDVIEW AND COUNSELLING PERSPECTIVE

With a client-centered, holistic, and attachment-based approach, Karen uses a variety of therapeutic paradigms to meet the individual where they are at and help them move towards real and lasting change. She considers it an honor to journey with a client as they gain insight and learn strategies to live a meaningful life.  Her worldview is deeply rooted in her faith in God.

4. COUNSELLING INFORMATION

Counseling In Person Only: $125/session

Session length – 50 minutes.

5. PAYMENT FOR SERVICES

Payment is due at the time of the session by cash or cheque or by e-transfer by the end of the day. Make cheques payable to Karen Callaghan

Cancellation Fee: With notification of less than 24 hours, clients agree to pay a cancellation fee equal to a full session.
